Beautiful day. Sunny skies, 20 degrees Celsius - whatever that means. I think about 70 Fahrenheit. Woke up in time for 10 o'clock church. We even splurged and had French toast for breakfast. I love our usual cereal routine and all, but French toast with good bread was a treat.
Church was a lot more what I expected here in the Nelson branch. Pretty even mix of Maori, Tongan, and whites. Interesting speakers. A beautiful Maori young woman, an older white woman, and an older Maori man. I didn't quite follow that last one. But very much the same format and flow as we have back at home. I met a nice woman there who offered her phone number if I'm in Nelson again and need a place to stay or anything - Celia Hawea. Really nice lady. I would call her if I end up here again. But as of now, my plan is to move on from here once my folks leave, and head up to the north island. But nothing is really set.
After church we went to the beach! It was a lovely beach, right outside town. Lots of people there enjoying the perfect Sunday weather. The ocean breeze made it a little too cool to swim, but I was content laying on the sand reading Bossypants. The sun was nice and hot. We stayed a few hours, watching the ocean and the people. There was this one little boy, about 3 years old, running in and out of the water, naked, rolling in the mud, jumping in the puddles. It was pretty entertaining. I could have sat there all day, but I started to feel like I could be burning, so we left. We'll be back tomorrow!
We had dinner at Subway, which was actually really tasty! They have $8 footlongs here instead of $5 footlongs. The whole city shuts down around 5:30 everyday, so everywhere around town was already closed. We just walked around a bit more and headed back to our hostel. I'm really enjoying these balconies they have here. It's so serene, the setting of our hostel. Pretty quiet, but right near the town centre.. Couldn't be better. Thank you, New Zealand, for being so extraordinary.
