Day two of sunburn. The pain is bad, but not too bad if I keep my legs out of direct sunlight. I didn't bring any light pants though, so my stretchy cropped spandex tights were my best option. Lathered up the sunscreen, but that's about all I could do. Dad had to leave at 5 am, so I woke up enough to say goodbye and went back to sleep. Mom and I had our first solo day. We spent a little more time in Nelson. I bought a scarf from a little shop by our hostel (souvenir number two). And bid farewell to Accents on the Park and our buddies there - Will from England, Tim from North Carolina, boy from Montana, boy from Korea. Time to head up to the Golden Bay. The distance on the map was about 57 km, but it takes a lot longer than you'd expect to get places here because the roads are so windy and narrow and sometimes steep. It's fascinating how the landscape can change so drastically so quickly. It can be farm land, then rainforest, then beach, then farm land again. It's cookoo.
We got to Takaka around four and checked into our hostel - Kiwiana. Every hostel has been so different from the others. this one had only five rooms, a smallish kitchen, but great backyard with hammocks, tables, and another outdoor kitchen. The separate garage has been converted into a game room/lounge area - where I'm currently sitting. Mom's here writing in her journal as well. Most of the other guests are in the backyard, but the sand flies are out, and i really dont want to add more bug bites to my hot hurty legs. Anyway, we checked in and walked into town to check it out. It was almost five o'clock and most of the shops in town were closing up. I want to look around more tomorrow; maybe I'll buy a sarong to keep my legs covered up. The sun was really hot here today too. Almost unbearable with my sunburn.
This place we're staying offers free homemade veggie soup for dinner every night, like the Glow Worm Cottages, so we tried it here. It was really good actually. Better than Glow Worm. After eating we drove up through the next town, Pohara, to check out what we heard was the best beach for swimming - Tata Beach. It was nice. We might go back Friday. Back at the hostel we met a few of our roommates. Matias and his brother from Uruguay, here with working visas, traveling from country to country. They go to Australia next, and then somewhere in Asia after that. Brave boys. Just met a German girl and her boyfriend who work here, nicest people. Here's to a new night in a new town in New Zealand. Goodnight everybody.
